Can I eat before a leg venous ultrasound?
A prep sheet that says nothing about food leaves a reader unsure whether silence means yes. For a leg venous ultrasound, one named source is explicit.
What the source says about food and drink
The page at my.clevelandclinic.org on upper or lower venous extremity ultrasound says: "You may eat or drink as normal the day of the exam. There is no prep for the exam." So the answer is yes.
Reading the two sentences literally
"May" grants permission. It does not require you to eat. "As normal" ties the permission to your usual habits. The first sentence also limits itself to "the day of the exam", so it says nothing about the days before.
The second sentence, "There is no prep for the exam", covers the exam the page describes. If your appointment adds a different test, that test comes with its own prep sheet, and the quoted lines do not reach it.
For background reading, there are pages on deep vein thrombosis, on evaluating varicose veins and on chronic venous insufficiency.
What to ask before you book
Does my appointment include any test beyond the leg venous ultrasound? Does my confirmation say anything about food or drink? If it disagrees with a general page, which one does the office want me to follow?
Asking at scheduling is enough, whether you are booking in Oak Lawn or somewhere else in the Chicago area.
The desk's note
A source about the exam in general cannot read your appointment sheet for you. If the sheet adds a food rule, the sheet is the document that governs your visit.
